How can a Doula Support you?
A doula is an investment in both yours and your baby's care and wellbeing, your birth is a unique event and you only get one chance to make this birth special and memorable for all of the right reasons.
A doula is practical and emotional support for you in pregnancy and birth and during the first postpartum days and weeks, our main role is to ‘hold the mother’ so you can best hold your baby. We offer encouragement, and information during pregnancy, practical and informative antenatal meetings designed to invigorate and empower parents to be to make informed choices for their birth. Whatever the birth intention, a doula can support and encourage when times are tough and help navigate the system as decisions need to be made.
As your doula I will go on call around your due date, typically 39 weeks until 42 weeks and be on call 24/7 for when baby decides to arrive, I will then join you either at home, hospital or the birth centre. Doula's are not medically trained but have in depth knowledge of birth and women centred care, the latest research and guidelines and can work alongside midwives harmoniously to provide you with all round care. My main role during labour is to help you keep calm and support you through your choices, having done the antenatal together prior to the birth we will understand one another and the birth intentions you hold. We will also go over different scenarios and together with your birth partner we will support your choices and make sure you feel heard.
During a postpartum visit I will discuss your birth, help initiate feeding, go through how you’re feeling and make sure I can hold space for those challenging first days and weeks. This may just look like sitting with you and talking, it may be providing you with space and time for a hot shower or to have a walk around the block with or without baby. It may be cooking, cleaning, helping with pets or older children. A variety of support is available and will be moulded to fit your needs.
